Rectal bleeding

Passage of blood through your rectum with or without stools is called rectal bleeding. This is not a disease but is a symptom of various harmless or life threatening conditions like cancer of the bowels or rectum.

Depending on colour of the blood, character of passage, relation to stool passage and various other accompanying symptoms will make it possible for colorectal surgeons to make a diagnosis of the underlying disease. Most of these conditions need camera test to diagnose it correctly.

Most important is not to make a diagnosis by yourself or by untrained people because it can cost your life or may affect quality of your life badly or may loose the window of opportunity to cure a cancer.

If you have a family history of any cancer, if you notice shortness of breath even without noticing blood with your stools, if there is a change of normal routine of motions, if you have lost your appetite or start to notice your clothes getting loose, if you are passing mucous(slimy material) with your stools they can be because of a cancer giving rise to bleeding.

Even when you have lumps coming out of anus with bleeding and with a diagnosis of piles or haemorrhoids it is not possible to exclude cancer without a camera test.

Piles, fissures, diverticulosis, inflammatory bowel disease, anomalies in blood vessels, polyps in bowel, bleeding due to gastritis complicated stomach wounds may be the cause of rectal bleeding in addition to cancer.

Making an accurate diagnosis of this symptom, treating the cause is mandatory in the management of these patients. One should not take any medication for rectal bleeding without establishing the diagnosis and excluding other conditions co-existing as that can cost their lives.
